The Rockpile Preview at Bird & Beckett from David Meltzer
The Rockpile preview at Bird & Beckett w/ pianist Bob Malone, singer-songwriter, dynamic performer of the highest boogie & woogie, was an ecstatic portent of much more to come & go. Don Prell on bass, &, alas, the drummer’s Nordic surname seemed to elude everyone. My brother Aquarian became transformed before us reading from his Nashville journals about a poet trying to break into song writing in that tough central zone for product & production. It was funny, lacerating, a revelatory work jolted into an intense performance w/ music cues Malone arranged — after all MR & Terri’s tsurris in putting this together, it was sweet & affirming to see Michael strut his stuff, transformed & blissed-out big time. Sweet sweet. The audience cdn’t have been more receptive & uplifted by it all. Over & out. –David Meltzer
ROCKPILE WORKSHOP REFLECTION APRIL 14, 2009
The workshop at Bird & Beckett went great!!! The place was packed. Thanks to everybody for coming out.
Bob Malone was rollickingly awesome and sweet. David M was beautiful as ever, angelic! I wasn’t bad but I forgot to grab the mic because I was so busy running around. But everyone said they could hear me fine. What a show!!
Star sightings: Sharon Dubiago and Neeli Cherkovski, singer Elya Finn and others.
Can’t wait until the next performance in LA.
After the show a group of us went down the street to a nice restaurant and ate barbecue pork, french fries, grilled salmon, gumbo, mussels. more wine than should be legal, key lime pie and a fluffy crusty bread pudding ….
Thanks to Terri Carrion for chauffeuring us all over the Bay Area….
We will be posting a video of the performance in a couple of days. If there is any thing you want me to talk about in future blogs, please let me know, this is a first. MR

an improvisatory performance
poetry & music
Preamble
Poets David Meltzer & Michael Rothenberg share the stage with L.A. pianist Bob Malone, backed by local heroes Don Prell & Chris Bjorkbom…cobbling together some of the raw materials that Meltzer & Rothenberg will take along on an 8-city road trip in the fall, troubadors on a meander through some sites central to the cultural upheaval that was America in the 1960s and 1970s, performing their collaboratively-assembled journal of the trip at stops along the way, with artists and musicians local to each spot.
The preamble workshop for the project is not to be missed!
