Jonathan Kane was born in Miami Beach, Florida in 1957. He studied art at the University of Florida and San Francisco Art Institute. "In this series of photographs, I wanted to address some of the formal elements of black and white photography in a direct manner without the benefit of any clear representation of known objects or forms. By stripping away context I strive to show the elements of image: shapes, texture, shadows, highlights, and composition in an abstract format. These photographs were shot with Ilford FP4 black and white film in a 35mm Nikon F camera. The negatives were developed in Agfa Rodinal film developer and printed on Oriental Seagull photographic paper. The resulting images were scanned on a flatbed scanner and manipulated by various computer software. The artist currently resides in Berkeley, Ca. with his dog Otis.
