Argos, the Sea

Of the sea one often speaks of wave and sand,
of the tumultuous water and laughter.
It has been spoken of its tongue licking the edges,
of its arm stroke sinking the shoals,
its oxen ire bellowing white foam.
But stop one moment in its mouth,
that cavity opening its dentate towards the sky.
How much honored wood, how much molten metal?
Its recent fauces have swallowed another boat.

Sitted by the coast I smell the rabid saltpeter,
comes to me the barking and the race in one wave,
but before throwing itself, it retains itself,
lowers the humble snout,
and gentle by my feet I pet the docile dog.

Autorretrato

no he podido en ningún tiempo

he buscado sin éxito

Self-portrait

Me, with a chopped-down tree as waist,
the temperament of a hymn,
the dark hairs of a mine
and the intelligence of a secret pocket,
I haven't been able at any time
to grab a flash of lightning in its travel of shaken bone
nor converse with a deer breastfed by the river.

Me, poor of skin marks and wretched with friends,
have searched to no avail
the line that flees from my hand,
the clear day pulsing through my veins
and the hard and hoarse guitar in my chest.

I have only found -and that is sad-
insatiable masks of reflections,
one or two lighted fuses of one sex or other,
basements written in the books
and never the word taking me to the poem.

Recuerdo infantil

Trémulo y resguardado en el armario,
como vaina de cereal en el invierno,
escucho el azote de las ventanas
y las puertas.
Y mi miedo alcanza altura de montaña,
profundidad de hueco
sin sonido de caída;
yo que a nada le temo
hoy en esta noche
que me siento tan solo
pido aunque sea una vela
para que me acompañe
con su también tembloroso brillo.

Childhood Memory

Trembling and shielded by the wardrobe,
like a pod of cereal in winter,
I listen to the lashing of the windows
and the doors.
And my fear reaches the height of mountains,
the depth of empty
soundless fall;
me who fears nothing
today and tonight
when I am feeling so alone
I ask for one candle at least
so that it will stay with me
with its also trembling shine.
