Anthology of Tibetan Poets

Ban Tenzin

He Was

He was
Born in Nepal
Educated in India
Yet
He says, he is Tibetan

A Tibetan, born in exile
Who has multi identity

who has more Indian friends
and
who can speak better Nepali than Tibetan
Yet he says, he is Tibetan

A Tibetan, in name
A Tibetan, in look
A Tibetan, in view
and A Tibetan, in history
but he was not born in Tibet
Yet he says, he is Tibetan

A Tibetan, holding a green book
but without refugee card
A Tibetan, having stock of
sympathy
but without real benefit
A Tibetan, with Indian degree
but unemployed
Yet he says, he is Tibetan

A Tibetan, who is proud of his
Tibetanness
A Tibetan, who is proud of his
culture
A Tibetan, who is proud of his
tradition
A Tibetan, who is proud of being
Tibetan

Though he suffers in exile
with lack of opportunities
with lack of education
Yet he says, he is Tibetan
And dreams to return to
Tibet
In hopes of gaining his real
identity
